Wait -- what year is it now?

It lives!

2015, huh? Looks like it's been about two years since the last entry, and even longer since I've played any games. Most of my gaming stuff has been sold off. I've been feeling the itch to jump back in. I miss it. It was my escape, meditation, and mental exercise. My wife even keeps telling me I need to do something to relax before I lose my mind. More. Lose it more is probably more accurate. Before I go full Ben Horne. But that could bring me to the same end, so it may not matter what I do...

Time and money are major roadblocks. That's pretty much the reason I quit gaming and sold off most my miniatures over the past 5 years or so.

I'm considering is trying some solo gaming. I would really prefer a live opponent, but I'm not sure how to swing that. Last week I started talking to a couple of old friends about the possibility of playing some ancients. But the more I consider it, the less practical it seems.

I've been laying out some rough ideas & rules for solo gaming using preexisting game rules. I'm considering both historical (again, probably ancients) and fantasy. In both cases I'm interested in trying out Hail Caesar and Crusader.

In the meantime I have spent a few spare moments finishing off some of the figures I left half-painted years ago. Like these rocket crew.

So who knows. This blog may be back. It may not. I'm trying to squeeze out a little optimism.

  1. Hey! Glad to see you are back.

Solo gaming does seem like the thing to do for someone with a small kid... they are demanding and absorbing until say 9 and then you have a couple hours to do all the chores... maybe also relax.

So I find that my only "free" time is lunch at work, or late at night. You may find the same.

So that is when my painting and whatnot occurs, and any gaming has to fit in there too... solo is probably the way to go then.

  2. That is exactly my situation. And even if I could find someone who was up for meeting to play a game at, say, 10pm, I'm horribly unreliable as I can't guarantee I won't pass out asleep in a chair or couch, or even on the floor in my daughter's room after finally getting her to fall sleep. Part of the reason I haven't even painted much is because I'm too exhausted and/or fall asleep by the time I get some time to myself.

So I figure that solo is a good way to avoid leaving someone waiting for me and I don't show up because I've fallen asleep at home.

  3. The number of days I fell asleep in my son's bed, or holding him in the rocking chair... quite large.

Just figure out what you like about the hobby, and poke at it. Painting 15-30 minutes a day eventually gets you somewhere, and the same with converting.

Eventually your daughter will take less time, and then you can pick things up again, but until then... keep it going.

  4. It's actually a combination of things eating away at my time, and I honestly wish there was also a way I could get to spend *more* time with my daughter. What I rwally need is an extra 6 hours or so in the day. ;)

But, yes, just trying to do a little painting when I can and keep the flame alive. Thanks for the encouragement. I really need it some days.

  5. Ha! It seems we both stopped blogging at close to the same period of time for very similar reasons.

Sleep will return . Hobbies can wait. And importantly you don't need to blog about it IF you don't want to.

Maybe once every 3 months you might paint a figure or teach your daughter a quick card flipping game who knows but don't feel compelled to blog of you're not into it right now!

I must admit I'd love to see you posting again as I still revisit your paint machine blog for inspiration but that’s just me being selfish!

As my wife often says “this too shall pass”...

  6. Thanks. I'm actually into the blogging aspect, I just haven't had much to talk about or photos to post. In addition to missing the painting and pushing figures around and rolling dice, I miss the social aspect of wargaming as well.
