The Upcoming Siege

This week I played a couple WFB games at 2200 points as a warmup to the annual Siege at the Tower tournament in Columbus. I've gone the past three years and won two of those three times. Both times with Skaven (once old book, once new book.) Two years ago I got flattened when I brought my Marienburgers (Empire.) This year I'm hoping to change the pattern and do well with the ex-Imperials.

Game One

I had to come up with a new list, as most recent games have been either 1500 or 2500 points.

My first game was against High Elves. No pics. We played the scenario in which one counts banners (forget the name.) I was doomed from the start. Deployment hadn't even finished and I joked that I wanted to start over. Yes, my deployment was just that bad.

Still, even with that, my army was outclasses. I had four large combat blocks against four HE combat units that were far better. I had two mages against two far better HE mages. We were probably close in terms of heroes, and the only advantage I had was in artillery... which (in spite of engineers using their re-roll ability) failed to impact the game. It was all over after 3 turns.


Game Two

I just got back from my second game this week. This time with a tweaked list, and fighting Skaven. I figured it would be another good game, since High Elves and Skaven are, in my opinion, two of the strongest armies in the game at the moment. (I'd put them both in the top 4.)



This game went significantly better for me. We played the Meeting Engagement scenario. The pic is from the bottom of the second turn. I went first and in those rounds I dropped the Abomination, destroyed the Plague Furnace and took out 2/3 of the monks pushing it, and caused 5 wounds on the Doomwheel that is in combat with the swordsmen in the photo above.

The shooting in this game made all the difference in this game. I eliminated or crippled the two biggest combat threats before they contacted me. In the previous game, I did nothing so my melee troops were outclassed by the time combat happened.


RPG Animal Sidekick

In my previous entry, I mentioned a bit more about the RPG game. I had previously posted a photo of my sidekick from the character creation session. So here's one of the sidekick from the individual/introduction gaming session recorded in Nob's Journal.

WAB & RPG & HE

I finally played my first game of WAB2.0 today. My Romans solidly beat a FotW Warlord army. Maybe it's the backdrop of the drastic (and more familiar to me at the momen) change between WFB7 & WFB8, but WAB2.0 doesn't seem much different (nor play much differently) than it used to.

After the game, my opponent spoke of doing an all skirmish army, to which I set up my reply:




This weekend I also tentatively dipped my toes back into the world of RPGs after 20 years away. The rest of the group are a mix of returning old-time RPG players and totally new players. Half the group got together for character creation. I will be playing a slightly dishonest hobbit drug dealer named (for now, unless I can think of something better in the next week or two) Nob Scrobbelton. :)

Except for the army standard bearer (red & white) the figures are plastics from the latest WFB boxed game. I was quite impressed with the quality of the figures. I'll be painting some of the new swordmasters next, and they look quite nice as well.

Sasha

Everyone posts photos of their pets in their blog, no matter what the topic. I believe I have even done so previously. This time, it's a little different.

I've been hunting around for suitable dog minaitures, and now have a small bin of them, in a quest to find a suitable match for our Shepherd/Husky, Sasha. This is one of the closest so far, though it's very large. She's mounted on a 20x40 base so I can actually fit her into infantry units in WFB/WAB (next to my self portrait figure, of course.)

It may look a little strange, but she actually is getting a bit of grey around the edges of her mouth as she gets older. She's around 8 years old +/-, we're not sure exactly as we got her from a shelter.

I believe it's a Ral Partha figure.

Pets, Painitng

I realized I hadn't posted (that I recall) the obligatory pet photo. I'm actually constantly on the lookout for shepherd & husky miniatures so I can paint up figures for her. Such a sucker for a cute face. She's half shepherd (where she gets most of her color) and half husky (where she get her two colored eyes, curly tail, and love for the snow.)


We also have a cockatiel (crazy, obsessed stalker of the dog) and a leopard gecko (inherited from friends, anti-social, we mainly feed her crickets and she just hides.)


I love both cats and dogs. And most other animals. Because of my living situation, I was "a cat person" for a long time, and would, in fact, have cats sitting on my lap as I painted figures. Ra, "my girlfriend," as my ex would semi-jealously call her, would even swat a bit a the paint brushes as I pained. On occasion.

Sasha, the sheperd/husky in the above pic, sometimes will sit in the back room with me while I paint, but she will exhale deeply, sighing as I pay more attention to the toy soldiers then her, and mope out of the room. Usually it's not a 100% bad thing, because if she's out of site of the bird, he's usually screeching like an enraged harpy if he can't see her (as would be the case in the back room...)
