Ambushed by trolls! (Preface)

IC 2437

The small trade convoy had made it's second trip to the highlands, and was on its way back to the Little Country. Two wagons were loaded with some sort of exciting new crops, or so everyone had been told. Nob was certainly excited, and the odd half-orc he had met with at the caves was certainly excited as well. Or maybe the latter was just exceptionally odd.

The details weren't much concern to the escort. They were a mix of hired, uniformed guards and mercenary scouts. The former were beneficiaries of Nob's first mission to the highlands. His trade in exotic crops between the hills, the Little Country, and Marienburg were quite a mercantile success story. One worthy of the City of Gold, but unusual for the hinterland. After those first journeys, many of the young hobbits who had accompanied the ambitions entrepreneur were signed on as Company Regulars, provided with high quality equipment and gaudy purple uniforms.

A successful second mission, they were told, would bring increased reward. Naive as they were, they didn't expect increased danger. The first mission had passed without incident -- a few simple hikes through the Broken & Waste Lands. Those first missions had been relatively quiet. But now, on the first leg of their second mission, they found themselves ambushed by a band of trolls. The beasts descended on them from the hills just as the convoy had made camp beside the sparse dirt road for the evening after leaving the half-orc village.

Even Nob didn't expect trouble. Fried and his half-orcs held great influence over this part of the highlands. But trolls were notoriously unpredictable. Were they double-crossed? Were the trolls a rogue element in the plan? It didn't matter, the only thing that mattered was fighting off the brutes and making it back home...

The battle was fought on my tiny little auxiliary table, 3' x 3'.  It was fought using the Dragon Rampant rules, my first attempt at adapting a miniatures game to solo play. Dragon Rampant works pretty well for that, due to the random activation rolls. Additionally, the scenario was fairly straight forward. The trolls were after the loot in the wagons. The hobbits were defending. Trolls would head directly toward the wagons unless they had been wounded by hobbits the previous turn (in which case they would attack in a 50/50 roll off) or hobbits were directly in the way. The hobbits would react based on their roles. Archers would avoid combat and shoot, militia and guards would protect the stuff..

Initial set up...

There were a LOT of failed activation rolls on both sides. That made for an unpredictable game. As soon as I thought one side was screwed, the other side would roll just as poorly. Here some hobbit archers had miraculously chased off some trolls from combat, only to blow their roll to shoot them in the back! Meanwhile, another group of trolls charges unstoppabley at one of the wagons!

Things get messy. No hobbit wants to melee with a bunch of trolls. But they manage to fend them off for a moment! Even one group who has already looted the wagons has dropped their precious reward and run of to further trouble!

In the end, the hobbits defend their camp and cargo. The trolls are beaten and chased off. For the moment....

This was my first time trying the Dragon Rampant rules. Although I've played some other solo games (mostly board games), this was my first attempt at crossing over. The solo rules were simple. The trolls were after the 'shrooms in the wagons. They would head there as their primary task. If there was a hobbit unit blocking their way, they would fight through. If they were wounded by a hobbit unit within charge range, they would have a 50/50 chance of pushing through to the chests on the wagons, or attacking whoever had hurt them.

There were some distractions, but for the most part the trolls carried on to their objectives. There were poor dice rolls on both sides. I'd say the rolls for BOTH sides were far, far worse than average. Every time I thought one side had really blundered in tragic fashion, the other side would follow suit!

That brings me to my next point... the game really seems to be a matter of random luck & dice rolls. Due to the simple mechanics, maneuvering and table-top game-play seems to have minimum impact. I played the whole thing out over the course of several 10-minute sessions.

Nothing mattered much except that there are two units in combat -- probably with similar stats. The game is all about the dice rolls. A little disappointing, even for a  solo or "beer & pretzels" game. It took longer to select forces and set up than actually play the game. There were tense moments -- will a certain unit survive before being overrun, etc. But, as mentioned, that was more a matter of dice rolling than anything like position, abilities, etc.

EDIT: Although I'd like a little more from the rules. I still had fun & don't want my criticisms to make it sound like I didn't. I'm going to give the game a few more tries. If nothing else, it was easy to put the game together, quick to play, and I didn't have to get bogged down with a bunch of complex or unfamiliar rules.

A Tale of Two Hobbits

Second hobbit of the new year. A contrasting counterpart to the first. One a member of civilized and courtly society, the other a spirit of wild nature. This one from Reaper Miniatures.

Hobbit Scouts

Stole away some bits of time the past few weeks to paint nine hobbity scouts. Just finished the bases tonight. The leader (who has a wonderful Brotherhood of the Wolf look to him) and the Reaper hobbit on the far right were painted previously. Also painted a tiny hawk from Reaper as well.

I need a new photo setup...

What's New? (July)

July's been a slow hobby month. Work continues to be busy, and we had a death in the family that's hit me pretty hard. Plus trying to fit in some summertime fun/events.

I'm currently blocking out colors on three command figures to supplement the recent OWAC Sea Elves as well as some hobbit scouts. Also starting on two hobbit characters -- one will represent a somewhat upper class mage, the other a wild nature based mage/shaman.

As a reward to myself for finishing the OWAC, I added back to the "unpainted" side of the equation and bought a box of Oathmark humans. I've been wanting some more rough/irregular types to use as bandits or rural Wasteland militia or rebels, or even just  medium mercenary troops. They look good. The figures appear a little shorter than the older Citadel Empire plastics (a few shown for comparison). But they are still pretty bulky and it looks like the Citadel Soldiers of the Empire and Militia heads will look good on the bodies (and vise-versa). The Perry WotR plastics (not in pic) look thinner all around and I think the heads may, unfortunately, not be as good a mix.

One potential problem, I'm not sure these will fit well on 20mm square bases. So I'm considering two options -- either multi-basing, as I did with the plastic Skeletons, or just switching to 25mm square bases for these. The latter works in the context of one of the conventions among WAB (and other games) players, in which lighter troops are considered as fighter in less dense formations, thus wider bases. Depending on the rules system this could impact their fighting capabilities due to the "footprint" of the figures. Other games it may not make a difference.

I'm thinking some of the Perry Agincourt mounted knights, with some minor conversion work, may make good heavy cavalry counterparts for these infantry. Maybe a bit more like restless "younger sons" from Bretonnia, or mercenaries.

I'm also making a (very small) start on organizing my Althammer setting/campaign ideas. More on that later....

Also on the Desk

Prepped a few more minis I may want to paint soon. There's another KoW tournament in January. I've only done two, but I'm sort of burned out on the tournament thing already. But as my options are limited, I might do it again. Contemplating a Kingdom of Rhordia list. A bit premature, since I was planning on trying to fit a JTC army into that list. But I don't have nearly the minis painted for it that I'd like to.

But at the very least, a couple of mounted hobbit spellcasters would be nice. One, a bit more "feral", has temporarily dismounted.

Honestly, if I'm going to do a Rhordia list anytime soon, I really need to paint up a boatload more hobbits. I may go back to undead again for this event. As long as I prepped the minis, though, I'd like to paint these two soon.

Where Did August Go?

Not much new here. August just flew by. The last two weeks my daughter and I have both been home sick with some sort of plague (both still sick.) Otherwise same old shit taking up all my time.

Today I was rummaging through some old boxes and found what is probably one of the earliest painted minis I've still got. Painted with enamel model paints, before I discovered acrylics. Grenadier orc.

As much as I'd like to keep him around for nostalgia, I dropped him in the paint stripper as I think he'll make a fine, if ugly, addition to my little half-orc project. Besides, I've got an even older mini that I keep around to remind me of the early days:

Other than that, the only gaming related stuff I've got going on has been getting lost in my fever addled head, thinking of new scenario & campaign ideas. There's one in particular that I've really fleshed out, utilizing minis I've already got but encouraging me to paint a few last items. It's based on something familiar, but different. Different-ish. I'm going to call it Vengeance of the Witch Blaster! I'll just need a few players. And a piece of terrain. And like one or two more units painted up.

Marshing into April

No more marsh-y themed minis for March. I'm still working on stripping the paint from those old Marauder trolls, and looking for the remaining two that I still don't have.  In the meantime, I am soaking the other four in some Dawn Power Dissolver, at the recommendation of Blue. My usual go-to, Simple Green, just wasn't cutting it this time.

I did manage to strip, prime and start on the MM41 ogre that finally completes my collection.

While that's all going down, I also, miraculously quick, finished the Westfalia goat knights!

Although I do think I will be turning one of these into a standard bearer at some point. Or maybe I will try to get a few more to create a standard, champion, and musician...

So with Big April coming up, I'm looking forward to...

Giants! (And the above-mentioned ogre.) A bit ambitious, and slightly out of focus it seems. First will be finishing the paint on the Warploque giant. While that's going on, I will prep the other two -- from Heresy and Otherworld.

IF, by some miracle that all gets done, I have more in mind. I would still REALLY like to sculpt my own giant. Given the timing, that's been on my mind again and I think I've got a decent picture in my head of that I want to do. Also, I've got some more giants here, still waiting to be painted. I have several of the Reaper Bones giants from their last KS. These are a bit larger than the older sculpts, and in fact one is a resculpt of one I've previously painted.

I've also got the extra heads from the Otherworld giant. The web site says to select one, but they ended up sending all three. I could try to magnetize them so they're swapable. Or maybe I can work out a way to get an extra giant out of the deal...

...oooooor maybe not.

Busy Week

It's been a busy week. I was on the road for work, the first time in a while. I worked my ass off so I would have time for a little personal time for a side trip to visit some missiles & spy planes.

I had been wanting to go back & spend more time at the Air Force Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB, but my plans haven't panned out. But since I was in the neighborhood (I was working just a few miles away!) I managed a little side-trip before heading home.

At this point, they've added an entirely new building, which was really cool as it offered a nice display of experimental, space, and presidential aircraft. They even offer walk-throughs of several generations of the latter. I may post more photos later.

Speaking of my trip, I was also working in the same strip of shops as a Games Workshop store. In spite of playing their games & painting their minis since the mid to late '80s, and even getting the grand tour of the Baltimore HQ, working a table at Games Day, etc. I've never been in an actual GW store. I felt like I should go in, but didn't really have any good reason to -- other than the "never been" excuse. But that turned out to be good enough. The store was nice, and the guy working there was friendly and helpful. In fact, I felt kind of bad not buying anything, since he answered a lot of my questions about their newer games.

Back home now, a bit tired and I ended up working on a pile of housework all day. But I just snuck off to the basement for a bit of painting time.

Finished the first of two High Elf Sky Cutters for a friend. Well, it still needs snow on the base. So, like 99% done. The other still needs a little work, but is mostly done.

I also painted five more of the hobbit goat knights. Six done, seven more to paint. Trying to come up with a name. Phillip's Lancers is the best I've got so far. (Woulds't thou like to charge deliciously?)

I'm getting anxious about finishing the High Elf commission, and these hobbit goat knights. The past few years I've enjoyed the March/Marsh and Big April themes. But at the rate my 2018 painting is going, these few high elf chariots and handful of hobbit knights will take me through the next month or two. Should I manage it, however, I will aim to paint the bog trolls in Marsh, and I have three BIG giants for April. (OK, one is half painted already -- a left-over from last year.)

And hey, look what arrived in the mail...

...I'll write down my initial impressions in a separate blog entry.

Test Goat

Not much time for painting lately, but did paint up a test mini from the unit of Westfalia goat knights.

Looking forward to getting some time to work on the rest of them.

On The Table

On the table...

...the heavy hitters of the Jackrabbit Trading Company, and some more of their goods. The chests and kegs are from WizKids. In spite of the "HD" and "Deep Cuts" labeling on the packaging, the detail is a bit shallow and soft. But the price was good, and I think they will look OK when painted up. I think I also need to go back and buy the adventurers camp for use with the JTC.

Daydreaming about solo gaming again. Measured up my basement and I don't think I can fit my table in. Further daydreaming about building some walls inside our (detached, un-insulated, unconditioned) garage to create a game "room." Unlikely. Getting the no-gaming-blues again.

Giant! (a game)

Revisiting an old idea for a game.
D

Drawn by the smells of the alehouse and sizzling wurst, a giant is lumbering (possibly drunkenly) towards/into the village/shire/whatever. The militia gathers and makes its stand. Individually, the hobbits may be small and weak, but the cumulative effect of their steadfast defense just may be enough to hold off the super-sized raider.

It will be like Ogre for fantasy skirmishes. But also not.

Edit: It could really be any asymmetric battle... dragon & kobolds, Goremaw & goblins, etc. I happen to like painting & collecting giants and Hobbits.

Goodbye 2017

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I'm currently suffering my way through the holidays at the hands of one of the chaos gods...

POP-KHORNE!

Just before Christmas I got a bit of popcorn kernel stuck between my teeth. After much work, I was able to dislodge it, but it had gotten into my gums and irritated them so much that it became infected and to the point that I've had excruciating pain throughout my gums and skull for the past week.  I'm already on my second round of antibiotics. So my first goal/hope for 2018 is to fight off the god of blood and skulls, and eradicate the presence of his unusually subtle servant from my household, the foul snack food of chaos.

On to more positive things...

DEADCEMBER '17

I'm pretty impressed with my painting output for Deadcember this year. I changed the target half way through, and in both cases over-planned for what I thought I could get done -- so I'm pretty happy with it. Even if I did cheat start the armoured skeletons a few days early. The total looks something like:

  • 15 Armoured Skeletons
  • 16 Skeleton Spearmen
  • 2 Mounted Skeleton Cavalry
  • 1 Mounted Wight/Necromancer/Whatever
  • 2 Liches
  • 1 Undead Owlbear
  • 12 Skeleton "Commandos"
  • 1 Necromancer on foot
  • 1 Small Skeletal Dragon

By my revised goal, I would have liked to get another 12 "commandos" done, but I hadn't planned on painting the dragon -- so I'll call it even. Especially given the pop-Khorne issue above, and its impact on my painting the past week.

THE REST OF 2017

...was a mix, I guess.

I'm disappointed I barely got any gaming in. A few hours with my old friends at their regular Game Day, and the recent KoW tournament. I had hoped for more. In particular, I missed a couple of Oldhammer events this year, and had really wanted to run a participation game at a convention (was aiming for Con on the Cob.)

On the other hand, I did paint (and blog) quite a bit. A few highlights... (Click to enlarge)

Starting on the Jackrabbit Trading Company:

Big April:

More Fomorians/Fimir:

Half-Orcs! (an unexpected side-quest, and one of my favorite projects of 2017)

There were more... disciples, hobbit scouts, goblins, and of course more undead. But that's a lot of pics already.

ON TO 2018!

What am I looking forward to in the new year?

To start with, I'm going to be painting a few more high elves to compliment the commission work I've done before.

After that the current outlook is mostly more of the same:

  • Jackrabbit Trading Company
  • Fomorians/Fimir
  • Giants (Big April '18)
  • Undead (mostly rank & file)
  • Marienburgers (mostly rank & file)
With a few additions:

  • Meat Hating Robot Pirates
  • More "Regiments of Renown" style mercenary units
  • Goremaw

And, of course, more gaming. There's another local KoW tournament planned. I'll see if I can make it to that. Maybe a convention this year? Oldhammer events? Solo board gaming? Hopefully something!

Thanks for reading, and thank you to everyone who comments. Since I don't game much (or get out of the house/office much at all), gaming blogs, fora, and a couple of FB groups are the closest thing to the social aspect of the hobby that I have.

JTC Boar Cleavers

Finished the Boar Cleavers. Definitely want to get more to bulk up the unit to 20-25 figures!

24 September 2017

Recruits for the JTC - Small and Large

Had to head out of town for a most of the week on short notice. Had a miserable time in Texas. Got home and had a busy weekend. But I did rush a few minis through...

In the center is the canine mascot for the Boar Cleavers (first two figures from last week are flanking him/her -- I think I need to come up with a name!)

On the ends are a couple of test figures for an upcoming unit (or two) of human halberdiers.

There will be even more humans to come, for the Jackrabbit Trading Company! Including archers. I've got this notion that the humans stuck with archery, while the hobbits, recognizing the limits of their pull strength and stature, switched to crossbows. (In case you're wondering about the odd reversal of fantasy stereotypes.)

When hobbits settled in the Little Country, there were already humans living there. The newcomers formed their own communities, as well as joining existing communities of the "tall folk." For the most part, the humans of the region found that they had more in common with the "little folk" than they had with their nominal governors bustling Marienburg, nor their neighbors in Bretonnia & the Empire, and the region has benefited.

When Nob Scrobbleton formed his Jackrabbit Trading Company, he recruited across the region. The Company is comprised of almost as many humans as hobbits (and even a handful of dwarfs!)

I believe the figure to the left is from a a Grenadier "Fighting Men" pack (now sold by Mirliton), and the gent on the right is from Front Rank. As previously mentioned, the hobbits are from Westfalia, and the dog has been confirmed as a (former) Mega Mini figure, now sold by Turnkey Miniatures.

Whoops! I just realized I forgot to go back and highlight the human's halberd heads! Guess I will go do that momentarily...

Boar Cleavers - WIP

Hit another snag with the hobbit goat knights. I was going to order some slotted bases, but noticed that since they have a single tab, they would end up being shifted to one side or the other of a standard two-slot base. I need to find bases with a single slot down the center -- or find some other way to base them.

So while I sort that out, I prepped some other hobbits... The Boar Cleavers. Taking their name for from their brave stand against mounted orc raiders on the Jackrabbit Trading Company's first caravan mission, the Boar Cleavers are the most elite regiment in the company -- nearly as effective as the average human unit!

More Westfalia miniatures, plus a regimental mascot (from a pack of dogs from Mega Miniatures?) to round the numbers out to 15 for the moment. (I'd like to fill this unit out to 20 strong, if I can get my hands on more hobbit halberdiers.)

Hope to paint them soon!

13 August 2017

Wight Riders, Goat Knights

Finished a rushed paint job on this unit of old Citadel wight/skeleton cavalry. They were a rare eBay win, and they were (are) in somewhat rough shape -- but the price was unexpectedly reasonable.

One of the next items up on my desk are the Wesfalia hobbit goat knights. They're cleaned and half assembled, but I discovered I am out of slotted cavalry bases! First time I've ever been out of any sort of slotted base in... ever? So I'm not even sure where to buy them!

Any advice? I'd like a US source. Cheap. NO laser cut wood or MDF. Magnetic bottoms would be a bonus, but not essential as I've got a big roll of sheet magnet that I use for making my own.

SPEAKING (typing?) of Westfalia hobbits... I just got the Second Breakfast KS reward! My very modest haul included small units of the Merry Halfmen (scout archers), Merry Goats (archer goat cavalry), some villagers, and a few characters.

What I could really use is a second chance at getting some of the first KS hobbits.

05 August 2017

I've been wanting to get to work on the Westfalia halflings since I got them, but have been procrastinating (other than the crossbow unit) because of the bent spears & lances. So I finally tried hot & cold water (straight from the tap) to re-position one and it worked pretty well. So... looks like hobbit's back on the menu boys!

(Edit: Just straightened out the goat knight's lances and it was easier & quicker than expected!)

Pic's a little dark, but wanted to post it because they're an Oldhammer paradox for some - old, but blobby plastics! My friends & I never would have gotten nearly as deeply into WFB if it wasn't for the Fantasy Regiments and Skeleton Army/Horde boxes when we were young. The armies in our group and at the two area game stores also reflected this. Almost everyone played armies that could be bulked out with a couple units of plastics.

I recently got these two goblins and a few of each of the others in a box of stuff I won on eBay, and it's a fun bit of nostalgia
